On a visit to my classes, Mark was delighted to find out my students were working on monologues from Edgar Lee Masters "Spoon River Anthology."Of course, he knew many by heart or mostly by heart. As I tossed him hats, he transformed into those rich turn-of-the-century characters, bringing them compassionately, darkly, hilariously, tragically and brilliantly alive -- Mrs. Purkapile, Indignation Jones, Lucian Atherton, Widow McFarlane, Harry Wilmans, Oscar Hummel, Archibald Higbee, Roscoe Purkapile and on and on. What an incredible one-person show Spoon River would have been. What an incredible one-person show Mark Lewis was. Leslie Carson
